Vickel Narayan is an Academic Advisor (Learning Technologies) at the Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation: Te Puna Ako, Unitec, New Zealand. He has a keen interest in Web 2.0 technologies and its potential to engage students and teachers in the teaching and learning process. Vickel is particularly interested in exploring mobile Web 2.0 devices and tools for creating, nurturing and maintaining virtual communities, social connectedness, fostering social constructivism, student generated context and context. He is also interested in Virtual Worlds particularly pedagogical implications of their use in education.

PhD research


Mobile learning (mlearning) over the last five years has gained substantial traction in education. The rapid advancements in mobile technologies are continually pushing the boundary of what is perceived possible and how it could be effectively used in education. From the leading researchers in mlearning around the world and from my own work, one major disruption that is caused by mlearning is its ability to blur the boundary between formal and informal learning or the bridging of different learning contexts. The ubiquitous nature of mobile device enables a learner the affordance to interact with multiple contexts to support his/her learning. These contexts are determined and defined by the learner (as an individual or as a group) and are predicated on their learning needs. As such, mlearning has the ability to allow learners to create and negotiate the perimeters for the context they choose to work/learn in – Learner-generated context (Heutagogy). This aspect of mLearning and learner-generated context forms the base for my research.

Aim: The aim of this research is to critique the application of learner-generated context (LGC) as a framework for learning and teaching with Mobile Web 2.0 tools (MW2.0). Research questions:

  1. How does learner-generated context impact on learning?
  2. What learner-generated context factors are conducive to enhanced learning?
  3. To identify and critique the characteristics and constituents of learner-generated context.
